Feeling stagnant? 5 deceptively simple changes I made to flip my life 180 degrees

TL;DR — Two years ago, I was stuck. I took these 5 simple steps to completely flip my life on its head and become the healthiest, happiest and richest I’ve ever been. If I can, you can too.

It’s okay to be stuck. And actually, it’s the recognition that will set you free in the long-term.

If you’re feeling tired, bored or frustrated with your current position in life, I totally get it. That was me two years.

Then I made some big changes and completely changed my life for the better.

In the last two years, I’ve …

This wouldn’t have been possible without making sweeping changes.

So lo and behold, the 5 shifts that made the biggest difference for me. Try them out and let me know via email or Twitter DMs how they go.

1. Take back your time

When you were young and you dreamed of what you’d be when you grew up, did you want to be a mid-level manager in a massive corporation?

I assume not.

I also assume you’d prefer not to donate your most precious resource – time – to a faceless company you don’t care about.

Psst… To light an extra fire under your butt, it’s literally their job to pay you as little as you will accept 🤯

  • If you’re more the 9-to-5 type, get a commission-based job where you actually get paid for the value you bring to the table.
  • Or if you’re more entrepreneurial, it’s time to start your own business. You’ll never look back.

When you work for yourself, you take control of your time and your effort – and therefore, your income. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as seeing the direct results of your hard work.

2. Have an unprofitable hobby

As an entrepreneur or motivated type-A guy, your work can really wear on you.

Emotionally. Physically. Energetically.

You need something outside of your work that energizes you and even loses you money. Dive into something you truly love — it could be sports, art, gardening, cooking, anything!

For me I figured out I loved taking care of my body and mind. So naturally, I started prioritizing …

  • Lifting weights
  • Resistance workouts
  • Reading in my spare time
  • Sweating every single day
  • Consuming a LOT of information

You need to be an absolute expert in something that doesn’t earn you money. Because once you start earning money for something, it becomes a job. And jobs are draining.

But make sure it’s something that gives you energy, something that you look forward to – not just another task on your to-do list.

3. Explore the world around you

Travel isn’t what your parents told you…

  • You don’t have to pay ridiculous sums to feel like a king.
  • You don’t have to put your life on hold to move around the world.
  • You don’t have to quit your job or stop growing to visit other countries.

The last two years, I’ve lived in 7 Latin American countries. Each of them with its unique pros and cons, cultural quirks and interesting people.

One thing I’ve learned is I’m happier somewhere else than where I was born. Sure, that might change. I’m only 26 years old after all.

But why not spend some time in a country 1) where I’m happier and healthier, 2) where my dollar goes farther and 3) where life is more interesting?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How do you know you’re happiest where you currently are? Why not try out another location?

This is a 100% reversible decision. Just head right back home (or another location) if you don’t enjoy it.

But you’ll come away from those travels with a refreshed gratitude for who you are, what you’ve experienced, the lovely people you’ve met and the bright future ahead of you.

Freedom is refreshing. What do you have to lose?

4. Change your relationship with money

I learned this from Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You To Be Rich. Horrible title, great content.

Here’s something most of us rarely consider – our relationship with money.

Believe it or not, your upbringing shaped your attitude about money. And sometimes (most of the time), these beliefs hold us back from living the life we truly want to live.

Take a step back and evaluate your relationship with money.

  • Do you have a tough time earning or spending money?
  • Do you stress about money? Is just the topic anxiety-inducing?
  • What do you think of people with money? Are they inherently evil?

Your relationship with money was formed by your parents’.

Fortunately, I grew up in an upper-middle class household. But we didn’t show off our wealth. In fact, my parents had a tough time spending money.

No bling. No fancy cars. No 5-course meals.

Now, I don’t like to spend money. Even if what I’m spending money on, will earn me more in the long-run. I see friends who earn less than I do, spend way more every month.

Over the last year, I’ve tried breaking out of this habit:

  • I hired an employee
  • I splurged on cool experiences with my girlfriend and parents
  • I invested in coaching and communities for my own personal growth

First, recognize your toxic habits and relationships. Second, unlearn them.

5. Shift from consumption to production

Have you noticed how much you consume on a daily basis? The news, TikTok videos, politics, gossip. Check your screen time and try to tell me otherwise. 😳

We’re always on the receiving end.

Switch it up. Create for the world to see.

For years you’ve consumed enough to be an expert on something. Figure out what that category is and share your perspective on it with the world.

Create a blog or a video or a painting or a poem or an image – whatever gets your juices flowing. Hint: Circle back to #2 for ideas!

  1. It’ll make you think more positively about yourself
  2. You’ll meet people who respect you for who you are
  3. You’ll open doors and opportunities you would’ve never imagined

If you want to accelerate those 3 things above, take the additional step and publish what you create. Yes, for the world – and your friends and family – to see.

I help creators and entrepreneurs grow their audiences. A year and a half into running that business, I started doing the same. And the results have been extraordinary.

I’m making money. I’m making friends with incredible people around the world. And my life is heading in a completely different direction than it was just 6 months ago.

That is the power of production. Now, I wish I had started way sooner.

Compliments and appreciation from Freedom Files suscriber

You will not take charge of your life until you take charge of your life.

Obviously, that’s redundant but read it again.

You will not control your own destiny and achieve what you want to achieve in your life … until you take ruthless action to get yourself in that position.

Start with these 5 things like I did two years ago, and you’re off to a rocking start:

  1. Take back your time
  2. Have an unprofitable hobby
  3. Explore the world around you
  4. Change your relationship with money
  5. Shift from consumption to production

What should I cover next?

I have a question for you:

If I were to dedicate the next Freedom Files YouTube video to you and one challenge you’re facing right now, what would that issue be?

Typically, I get something like the following:

  • I can’t find a remote job
  • I don’t know the right long-term location for me
  • I don’t know how to start a business
  • I am a digital nomad but haven’t settled in a country
  • I pay way too much in taxes and need a solution
  • I want to invest in countries before they are popular

Let me know by emailing or DMing me. I’ll write about it publicly because many others likely have the same challenge as you do.
